To mark the occasion, a tea dance was organised for members, friends and representatives from the Powys and Radnor Federation of Women’s Institutes; everyone was suitably dressed in styles of the era. The WI nationally was founded in 1915 and this year celebrates 100 years. WI member, Mrs Beth Clarke, gave a short, informative talk on the history and birth of the WI, which now has 200,000 members worldwide. The first WI was founded in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada in 1897. The movement brought women from isolated communities together and offered training in home economics, child care, poultry keeping and small animal husbandry.

“The WI has a long history of non- political but radical campaigning, and isn’t solely about ‘jam and Jerusalem ’,” said Mrs Clarke.

“During the Second World War, the WI cared for evacuees and received sugar from the government to make jams, preserves and chutneys.”

Mrs Sue Mullins and Mrs Marlene Evans read extracts from the first Gladestry WI minute book.

The first entry is as follows: January 10, 1924. A meeting was held in Gladestry schoolroom to form a local branch of the NFWI.

Mrs Claude Lewis, local organiser, and 19 local ladies were present. It was decided to hold monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of every month, the first meeting to be January 7.

Subscriptions to be two shillings per member. A Miss A Watkins was to give a lecture on How to be a Good WI Member. Activities included rush mat making, the making of a box seat, first aid, home nursing and poultry keeping. Ms Stella Oakes cut the birthday cake and members and guests took to the floor for dancing, led by Mr and Mrs Davies.

Hereford

CHURCH SERVICES – At St John’s Methodist, St Owen Street, tomorrow 8am Morning Prayer, Sunday 10.30am Morning Worship, Wednesday 8am Morning Prayer, 10am Holy Communion.

VAGA PROBUS CLUB – Meeting on August 11 was a talk by Eileen Hammond entitled My Life in Charitable Fund Raising. Eileen gave a potted history of her work in the voluntary sector in which she has worked for over 35 years.

She started in the 1980s as West Midland’s area organiser before being promoted to regional manager for the north of England. By the mid 1990s she had become UK director for motability followed by the first appeals director for the Shaftesbury Society, establishing and managing an appeals department to meet annual revenue needs as well as appeals for capital projects.

In 1998 she set up an independent consultancy, training and advising clients on a wide range of charity issues. She has been a member of the Institute of Fund Raising since 1998 and in recognition of her contribution to the profession she was made a Fellow of the Institute.

So what does fundraising involve?

Well there are different types of fundraising; eg: 1 Capital appeals from large organisations who give on a regular basis, small numbers of very large gifts.

2 Large numbers of small donations, private and public collectors all combined to produce considerable sums for charities.

3 Public sectors – grant making trusts, including the lottery, rotary clubs etc, churches and other religious organisations.

All these require management and recruiting suitable staff and volunteers, their training and motivation.

To date she has raised over £40m for good causes, which is quite an achievement, but it has not been a course of merely asking for contributions. One has to be skilled in identifying what potential donors wish to contribute to and maintaining regular donations.

This requires training of skilled negotiators, professionally qualified people capable of presenting the desired picture to secure funds, being creative and motivating staff and volunteers.

However, all of these activities relate to costs, eg; for staff to raise £1m requires an input of training of £100,000 by working out the value of time and expenses to realise a profit noting that a 10:1 ratio is an achievement.

Eileen wound up her talk by referring to the help given by the many celebrities she has met in raising funds for their respective charities, eg; golf days, Jim Davidson, Henry Cooper, Norman Wisdom plus Princess Anne and Alvin Stardust, Roy Hood the Music Hall trip, Princess Alexandra, Jack Profumo and Terry Waite.

These summed up the task facing her and her staff. She summarised by stating you have to get the right people; to ask the right people; for the right things, in the right way at the right time.

Eileen was warmly thanked for her talk which gave a much more enlightened understanding of how charitable funds are raised.
