WORSHIPPERS gathered at Hereford Cathedral for the Diocese of Hereford’s first ever beacon event for Thy Kingdom Come.
The celebration on June 4 was one of many events at 30 cathedrals across the country held as part of a global call to prayer by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, for the Christian festival of Pentecost.
Three hundred people packed the nave of Hereford Cathedral and the event focused on prayer, picnic and praise around the theme of the Lord’s Prayer.
Event organiser, Revd Preb Kay Garlick, said: “It was wonderful to see people, young and old, from all over the diocese, gathering at the cathedral with their Pentecost banners, and everyone wearing something red.
“As we prayed and sang together, there was an atmosphere of real warmth and fellowship inside, and then indeed even outside, because the sun came out just in time for the picnic.”
Across the diocese, many more people joined in by praying in their local churches, hosting prayer stations or helping others try prayer for the first time.
Such was the success of this year’s event that plans for next year are already underway.
