AN appeal for bell ringers has been made to make sure as many bells ring out as possible across the county to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

On November 11, 1918 bells were rung out to announce the end of the war after having been restricted during the four-year war.

During the war 1,400 bell ringers died and, as it has been 100 years, the Central Council of Church Bellringers (CCCBR) has tasked the Big Ideas Company with a Ringing Remembers campaign.

They have taken on the task of helping to recruit 1,400 ringers, whether they are new ringers, returning ringers or those already learning, to commemorate the fallen bell ringers.

‪On November 11 the CCCBR would like as many bells ringing across the country as possible and Hayley Clarke from Hereford, along with two others, has been tasked to organise this for Herefordshire.

She said: "We have 38 ringable towers in our district, so this is no easy feat. I am in the process of asking all these towers if they would be willing to partake in this event. It is going well so far, and we have had lots of positive replies.

"However, to get all bells ringing in the district we are 60 ringers short. To help towards the 1,400, we are looking to recruit at least 60 ringers, hopefully we will get more."

At the weekend they hired Ambergate Campanile, a mobile ring of 10 bells, which was placed at the west end of Hereford Cathedral to enable people to have a go.
