AMY Green is hoping to make history by rowing more than 3,500 miles across the Indian Ocean – naked.
The former Hereford Cathedral School student and three friends will be “getting ‘em oarf” with the aim of raising £50,000 for Breast Cancer Care.
The 33-year-old grew up at Dinmore Manor Estate and is now a television producer, living in London.
Her team – the Ocean Angels – are aiming to set a world record for being the first and fastest all female crew to row from Australia to Mauritius in the world’s first Indian Ocean Rowing Race in April 2009.
The team, which includes Sarah Duff, 25, Fiona Waller, 34, and Jo Jackson, 27, are planning to undertake the 3,720 mile journey naked to avoid saltwater sores.
Amy said: “I took part in the London to Paris rowing race in May and raised almost £10,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
“Afterwards, I decided I wanted another challenge and I met Fiona and Sarah who had both rowed the Atlantic earlier this year.”
The team have all been affected by cancer, which is why they chose to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.
Fiona said: “I saw my mother, Elisabeth, go through and eventually die from breast cancer in 2000.
“I was also diagnosed with cancer just after my 30th birthday so I have seen the impact the disease can have.
“This fundraising is my way of saying thank you to those who helped my mum and improved her quality of life while she was going through horrendous treatments.”
Amy and the girls, who are preparing for the 75-day trip by rowing along the River Thames, also have a personal trainer and nutritionist to help them prepare. They will need to row two hours on, two hours off, all day, every day.
To keep up energy levels, they will have to eat 7,000 calories of freezedried Army rations a day and make their own drinking water with a desalinator.
Amy, who produces television programmes such as the Weakest Link and Celebrity X Factor, added that the team are creating a ‘Faceboat’.
“The faces of our supporters will be pictured on the hull of the boat. It will help to motivate us and it’s a way of involving people.”
The girls are also planning to update their blog regularly and supporters will be able to track their progress at oceanangels.co.uk For information about sponsorship call 07985 962 427.
