AN ambitious 90-year-old will be feeling sky high on Saturday when she leaps out of a plane at 12,000 feet.

Maggie White wants to raise money for the Quaker meeting centre she attends at Almeley Wootton and decided on a sky-dive.

“I’m not in the slightest bit nervous and am looking forward to it immensely,” said Maggie, who will also raise funds for the charity Independent Age.

She said: “An extension is planned for the meeting centre which will cost a lot of money. I haven’t got much money to give them so I thought I would do this. I think it will be fun.”

However, it won’t be the first time Maggie has been up in a small plane.

As a nine-year-old, her father, who had a pilot’s licence, would take her into the skies.

She said: “I used to help fly the plane with him although I couldn’t manoeuvre the tail because my feet wouldn’t reach the rudder!”

Maggie, from Pembridge, sent out almost 200 sponsorship forms to friends and says she has been amazed by the response her sky-dive has attracted.

“I was getting sent money all the time and I’ve raised nearly £2,500 so far,” she added.

“People say I’m brave but that’s nonsense. I’ll be attached to a man who knows what he is doing!”

Maggie did say, however, that she hopes she can shake off a cold ahead of the jump which will take place at an airfield in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Maggie can send a cheque made payable to Margaret White, c/o Clarissa Burgess, Independent Age, PO Box 1319, Swineshead, Bedford MK44 2WT.
