VETS are warning rabbit owners that their pets could run a risk of catching myxomatosis, the killer virus prevalent in the wild rabbit population.
Leominster's Ryelands Veterinary Practice said it has had to put down two pet rabbits, belonging to children at different addresses in Leintwardine, after the animals contracted myxomatosis. The animals were brought in with puffy and swollen eyelids and other swellings.
"I have never seen it before in pet rabbits," said vet Deborah Seamer. "We tried treatment initially, but it was no good. Sadly, both rabbits had to be put down."
Ms Seamer said the disease was spread from wild rabbits by fleas which may be carried on cats and dogs. Pet rabbits could be protected by a flea treatment or vaccine.
