I am writing to you on the day of the national Let Our Kids Be Kids campaign, (Hereford Times, May 5), to keep children off school in support of a year 2 SATs boycott.

I have boys at school in years 2 and 6 therefore both will be taking SATs next week. It is quite unbelievable the time that has gone into preparing for these tests by the school, and while I put absolutely no blame on the staff, this has to be detrimental to providing a rounded education.

While I think all would agree that we should strive to improve education for our children, this should not be done to the detriment of the enjoyment of learning or by putting unreasonable expectations on the workload of teaching staff. Our boys are lucky that their school values inspiring a love of learning, but even so there seems little time for exploration and creativity.

It seems clear that the current government are refusing to listen to those teachers who really understand what it is like to inspire children day in day out, and have dedicated their careers to doing so.

As parents we need to make our voices heard in support of education professionals.
