TWENTY-two-year-old Toby Davis was “over the moon” after winning the 33rd MSA 250 National British Superkart Grand Prix.
“It was special because my brother and I have always wanted to win this race,” said Toby.
“I couldn’t have done it without my father Richard supporting me as he is the mechanic, the financial provider and the sponsor behind it all.
“He was thrilled to bits when it was announced that I had won.”
The victory came as a bit of a shock to the Hereford-born star, who admitted: “I won the first race on the Saturday but in the final race on Sunday, I came second on the track.
“However, the guy ahead of me was penalised because he jumped the start and I had finished 0.4 seconds behind him.
“It would have been nicer to win it on the track but I deserved to win because the guy in front cheated and that’s that,” said Toby.
The former Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School pupil admitted: “I celebrated with a nice long sleep.
“It was an exhausting three-day weekend of travelling and racing.”
Brother Ben, 20, finished seventh out of the 45 competitors in the race but Toby said: “Ben had issues with handling and finished a bit lower down.
“He was happy for me and echoed my feelings in that it would have been nicer to win on the track. We are competitive with each other but we share information, look at data together and analyse it,” added Toby, who lives in Newport and works as a graphic designer in Cardiff.
Toby currently leads the MSA British F250 Superkart Championship by five points, while brother Ben is sixth out of the 26 drivers, with three more race dates remaining.
“I want to win the championship and that would be something to take home two trophies in just the one season,” admitted Toby.
If the Grand Prix winner achieves his target, he said: “From there the next step would be to win a European title but that’s about as good as it can get.
“In that instance my brother and I would need between £5-10,000 to be able to do twin-cylinder superkarting, in the likes of Holland, Germany and France where the sport is quite popular.
“Superkarting is all about money,” added Toby, who grew up in Much Marcle.
Toby will be trying to defend his championship lead at Thruxton in Hampshire this weekend, before trips to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire in September and completing the season at Donington, East Midlands in October.
