THERE may have been reasons why you previously rejected buying a small car.

But many of the runabouts on the market nowadays are bigger, with better seating arrangements, larger boot space, clever storage ideas and super economy, so they are well worth another look.

Downsizing could be the answer for many families who want to save cash on the purchase price, fuel or road tax or help save the planet with lower CO2 emissions.

Of course, the big question is whether smaller transport would suit your lifestyle. If it does, a good choice is a Mercedes-Benz A-class, particularly if it comes with the manufacturer’s Blue Efficiency pack.

Although generously equipped, the A-class cars don’t come cheap. But considering the inspired packaging and, of course, the inherent quality and subsequent desirability, the compact A-class vehicles are not as expensive as you might think.

For the smaller family who wants to keep a tight rein on spending, the 2.0- litre turbo-diesel Blue Efficiency in Classic SE guise with three doors will be easy on your wallet.

It is offered with a five-speed manual gearbox and an on-the-road price of £15,350 but the model is outstanding for its economy, returning 53.3mpg around town and 74.3mpg on the open road to give a combined figure of 64.2mpg. With this comes CO2 emissions of only 116g/km.

The 82bhp motor is honed for economy, so the car is nothing like as perky as you might think up through the gears, though the power delivery is more pleasing on the open road.

The 0-62mph acceleration time of 15 seconds indicates its rather slow speed but there is more generous oomph at the top end, with the maximumbeing a spirited 106mph.

There are, of course, more performance- orientated vehicles in the Aclass range but, for many, the Blue Efficiency model’s fuel returns, low emissions and impressive versatility will be enough for them to part with their cash.

The ride is on the firm side but it is composed and comfortable, with plush and well-shaped seats contributing to the easy-to-use interior.

The handling into tight bends and on twisty routes is very competent.

The A-class has recently undergone a significant facelift which has given it sharper and bolder looks, particularly at the front, together with more safety and luxury equipment.

Inside, new trims give a classier appearance. The smooth and good quality plastics add to the ambience of the cabin, with the high-grade upholstery fabrics being of a similar standard to that of more expensive Mercedes.

While the A-class is a comparatively small car, it is brilliantly conceived with good head, leg and shoulder room in the front and back. The rear seats, for instance, can be shifted to obtain a cavernous space to carry large or awkward-shaped items.

The cabin is spacious and seating can accommodate five adults. The driver has the controls grouped together which help to make the car easy to live with.

The list of standard equipment is as long as your arm and puts much emphasis on safety and security measures, as well as the latest technology, which includes Bluetooth connectivity.
