ST MICHAEL’S Hospice has received hundreds of thousands of pounds to help it on its way to raising millions for a much-needed revamp.
The Bartestree-based hospice received £680,000 from the Department of Health that is a big boost to their £11million fund-raising target, which will replace the current 16 beds with 20 beds in single en-suite rooms personalised to the patient and the building of therapy rooms, among other things.
Twenty-one other hospices in the West Midlands providing end of life care to terminally ill children and adults received a share of £60million from the government.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Hospices help patients and their families at what can be the most difficult part of their life.
“This extra funding will help bring hospices up to date, so staff and volunteers can work in modern environments, helping them continue to provide wonderful support with compassion and kindness.
“Patients will see a huge difference in their surroundings that play a considerable part in helping them psychologically and physically.”
St Michael’s fund-raising will take part in two phases; the first phase aims to see £8million raised - half of which they have already - through trusts and foundations and significant gifts from individuals or groups.
The second phase is for local people to raise £3million in whatever way they can, whether it's by hosting a coffee morning or completing a charity run.
To donate, deliver money directly to the St Michael's Hospice, Bartestree, Hereford, HR1 4HA.
