THE Olympic legacy was alive and kicking as a Ledbury auctioneer brought the hammer down on the final London 2012 trinkets.

H J Pugh and Co, of Market Street, were chosen to conduct an auction of hundreds of items of British sporting history.

Crowds flocked to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Saturday as thousands of pounds were spent on more than 200 special lots.

Auctioneer James Pugh said: “It was a once-in-alifetime opportunity. For a local firm to get it we are very, very honoured – it could have gone to one of the big boys, so hopefully we have done everybody proud.”

The one-off farmer’s scarecrow prop used in the Green and Pleasant Land section of the opening ceremony proved to be the most popular item, reaching a grand total of £2,020.

A framed print signed by Team GB’s 11 track cycling gold medallists, including Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott, sold for £1,000, two giant commemorative stamps signed by Mo Farah reached £800 and £860 respectively and four Olympic torches went for between £1,500 and £2,000.
