FOOTBALL CLUB – There is a busy weekend ahead at Presteigne Football Club. On Saturday the first team entertain Abermule in The Spar Mid Wales League Div 2. Then on Sunday there are two cup finals. At 2.30pm Brecon will entertain either Knighton or Builth in the final of The Alfred Sparey Cup.
This will be followed by the Edwin Traylor Memorial Cup when Presteigne under 18s will play Pegasus under 18s. The knockout will be 6pm.
There will be a barbecue all day and the bar will be open. Why not come down and support your local football club.
THANK YOU – Sarah Powell organised a colossal cake sale at the weekend raising money for Help The Heroes. She would like to thank everyone who attended and helped raise £600 and also Chris Powell, Lornas Sandwich Shop, Graces, Halo, Carinis, Bryn and Kirsty, Leanne Sanderson, Artisan Print, the primary school, Costcutter, The Wine Bar, The Fig Tree, The Radnorshire Arms, The Barbers, Annes Fruit and Veg, East Radnor Leisure Centre, plus anyone else who donated cakes and prizes etc. She also thanks Lorna Griffiths and Anne Morris for doing the teas, Martha Perks and Rosie Poston for setting up and Sgt Simon Powell for attending and representing Help The Heroes.
MUSIC – There is an afternoon of music with Rebecca Afonwy Jones, mezzo soprano, and Alice Turner, piano, at The Assembly Rooms on Sunday at 3pm. The programme will include favourite opera arias and Welsh song.
Admission is £10 at the door.
ARTS AND CRAFTS – The monthly arts and crafts fair takes place on Saturday at The Assembly Rooms from 9.30am- 3.30pm. All the stalls are by local artists showing their own work.
GARDENING CLUB – The next meeting of Lingen Gardening Club will take place on Tuesday at Lingen Village Hall from 7.30pm. This month Maurice Sanders Everestt will talk on Tresco Abbey Gardens. Visitors are welcome for £3 with members paying 50p. This will include refreshments. For further details call Alvin on 01547 540176.
GARDENS OPEN – The Cloister Gardens at Pant Hall, near Willey crossroads, will be open to the public on May 12 from 2pm-6pm as part of The National Gardens Scheme. Admission is £3.50 with children free. Sorry dogs are not allowed.
MUSIC – The popular Mark Brown is back at the Royal British Legion Club on Saturday from 8.30pm. Admission costs £3 at the door.
FLORAL ARTS – The next meeting of Presteigne and Borders Floral Arts Society will take place on May 8 at 7.30 in the memorial hall. Pat Smith will be giving a flower demonstration. The competition for this month is In The Frame. Visitors are welcome and the cost is £5. Members are reminded that the annual subscriptions of £20 are due at this meeting. MARKET – The monthly farmers’ market will take place this Saturday at the memorial hall from 9.30am. All the usual stalls will be there along with refreshments.
FOLK AND JAZZ – Paul Sartin and Paul Hutchinson are Belshazzar’s Feast and will be performing at the Assembly Rooms on May 11 from 8pm. They will play traditional folk music, classical and jazz, a bit of pop and lashings of wry humour. Tickets are £10 at the door or can be pre booked by calling the Judges Lodgings on 260650.
HISTORY GROUP – The next meeting of Byton, Combe, Stapleton and Kinsham History Group will take place on May 8 at the Arkwright Hall in Kinsham at 7.30pm. Dr Ian Dormar will talk on Seeing The Woods for the Trees – the importance of woodland from a historical perspective.
Admission is £3 at the door. There is no membership fee at this group.
MUSIC – Guitarist/vocalist Gary Owen, from Hereford, will be playing 60s, 70s and 80s music at the Royal British Legion Club on May 11 from 8.30pm. Admission will be £3 at the door. Everyone is welcome.
100 CLUB – The football club recently held its 100 Club draw for April at The Farmers Inn.
Landlord Andrew Crowe picked the following winners – £100 Mal and Dean Tomkins, £50 Paz Clee, £40 Cynthia Rebell and £25 Marg Weiland. The next draw is on May 31 in The Dukes.
GATHER ROUND – Marion Rowlatt invites you to gather round the piano and sing for fun on May 11 from 11am. Adults cost £5 with children free. Everyone is welcome from nine to 90 with or without experience.
FUN RIDE – The annual fun ride around the beautiful Radnorshire countryside takes place on May 12 from Norton Manor Park. The first horse will leave at 10am with the last horse leaving at 1pm.
Riders can choose either the six or 12-mile course. The cost is £12 for adults and £6 for children.

TALK – There is an illustrated talk by Nigel Jones of Clwyd- Powys Archaeological Trust at Walton Village Hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm. Admission is £3 at the door. Everyone is most welcome.
CAR BOOT – Just a reminder that John Beddoes school PTA is having a car boot sale on Sunday in the playground from noon-4pm.
Boots cost £5 and vans £8. To book a place, call the school on 267565 or pop into the reception. Future car boots will take place on June 2 and July 7.
SUNDAY SERVICES – There is holy communion at St Andrew’s at 8am. This will be followed by a family service at 11am. There will also be holy communion services at Lingen and Knill, both at 9.30am.
BLUES, JAZZ AND COUNTRY – Bring your instruments along to the Radnorshire Arms on Monday from 7pm and just play or come along and listen. It’s that easy. For further details, call 267406 or 07811587501.
