TO soften the blow to motorists, Herefordshire Council is making four city car parks free from 3pm during the Newmarket Street closure this month.
Merton Meadow, Friar Street, Venns Close and St Martins car parks will enjoy the offer – running during the four-week eastbound closure for drainage works to the Old Livestock Market development starting May 12.
The news has come as a boost to city centre traders concerned that the anticipated gridlock will scare off shoppers coming into Hereford.
Len Tawn, of Hereford City Retail Forum, said: “We are pleased that the council has recognised the importance of supporting local businesses during these works.
“We hope that people will take advantage of this offer and continue to support the shops in Hereford”.
Currently Merton Meadow - Hereford's largest city centre car park with 800 spaces - only costs £2 all day.
However, the other three facilities, combining for 294 spots, currently charge £1/hour until 6pm.
