DETOURS set up to counter the closure of one of Hereford’s busiest streets have passed their first test this morning.
The two lanes heading east on Newmarket Street were closed yesterday and will remain shut for the next four weeks.
However, traffic seemed to flow well through the city centre this morning as drivers were directed north along Edgar Street.
The closure is required because of a Welsh Water-led project connected with the development of the Old Livestock Market (OLM).
The drainage upgrade cannot be completed at night due to health and safety restrictions so the road will be closed throughout the day.
While routes in the city centre were clear, roads to the north of Hereford were busier than usual in the rush hour.
Holmer Road, Grandstand Road and Roman Road were among those affected as drivers, possibly looking to avoid the city centre, took alternative routes.
