CHAZ Davies battled to a fifth-place finish at Monza in the fastest-ever World Superbike race - but crashed out in the second.
In both races, Davies started well, rising quickly from ninth on the grid to challenge the front-runners.
Davies was able to hold on to the fifth spot in race one.
“It was fun to battle but there is no need to fight around here because the front group goes away too quickly and you lose everything,”
said Davies.
“I could see that I was closing a little bit on the front group but, in the end, it was not possible to catch them.”
However, the Herefordshire bike ace had a more difficult job doing in the second.
Having again started well on the Italian track, Davies went wide in a chicane and dropped back to eighth before a crash on lap 12.
“Obviously, I am disappointed to crash, but I am happy because we’re going in the right direction
