CONCERT - On June 22 at 7pm there will be a concert at St Mary’s church, Marden. The entertainment will be provided by Vital Spark, a west gallery choir.
West gallery music was played in the galleries of English churches from the 1600s to the middle of the 19th Century. It was nothing like the present day concept of church music. It was a robust style of music, characterised by powerful, unorthodox harmonies, exciting rhythms and simple counterpoint and was sung in an uninhibited way, accompanied by fiddles, cellos, clarinet and other instruments. It eventually lost its popularity during the Victorian era. This is an evening not to be missed. Tickets on the door are £7.50 for adults which will include light refreshments. Children under 16 are free. Contact Dave Evans on 01568 797644 for more information.
