WITNEY-on-Wye's toll bridge has metamorphosed into a troll bridge as new owner Maggie Taylor found inspiration in her new home for a children's book, Walter under the Bridge.
Maggie, joint owner of the bridge with husband Grahame Penny, moved in to the adjoining toll cottage just two years ago. “It was during the refurbishment that we discovered Walter, our troll, when he shyly came to complain about the noise.”
The book, based on an idea by Maggie. has been written by local author Dion Child and illustrated by local artist Graeme Bowen. Its imaginative storyline draws the reader in to the story about how Walter the Troll was forced to search for a new place to live when he discovered Whitney Bridge and made a home under its arches over 200 years ago.
“Legend has it that every bridge has a troll living under it, but not many bridge owners have met theirs yet,” says Maggie. “They generally tend to keep themselves to themselves.”
Walter Under the Bridge is suitable for children aged 4-9 and is available on-line and in book shops, or email info@whitneybridge.co.uk
