HIGHLIGHT of Day Two at the Radnor & West Hereford Hunt Bank Holiday meeting at Cold Harbour was the success of Minsgill Mans in the four-mile Men's Open for the Crudwell Cup.
Taking the lead with a circuit to run, Minsgill Mans, ridden by James Tudor, was always travelling strongly but could not shake off the persistent challenge of Shuil Monty.
And it was only at the second-last fence that the Welsh challenger asserted to win by four lengths.
Tudor, who earlier in the day had taken the opening Restricted race aboard Allborn Lad, said: "He can be a bit free and I was worried he might be his own worst enemy over this trip. But he loved the ground."
The Intermediate race saw four runners go to post with Strong Weld and Itsalf disputing favourtism, which jest went to Strong Weld from the Eastnor yard of Nicky Sheppard.
From flag-fall it was Strong Weld who went to the front under rider Liam Payter and the partnership gave a exhibition of bold front-running to record an all the way success over Itsalf with The Unamed Man back in third place.
Despite the best efforts of the organisers, the drought-like conditions caused problems on the first day of the meeting with firm going restricting the runners.
Eurylaus, from the yard of Hanley Swan trainer Andy Hobbs, followed his win at Brampton Bryan with another victory in the hands of champion jockey Richard Burton, with The Hearty Joker, owned and trained by veteran Welsh Border Counties secretary Dick Pike, back in second place.
The win, which saw Burton move on to the 30-winner mark for the season, was another for owner David Richards, whose late son Mark was a regular rider on the point to point circuit prior to his untimely death.
Another to follow up a win at Brampton Bryan was Magicien who, in the four-runner Men's Open, was sent off 1/4 favourite in the hands of rider Adrian Brown for Shobdon trainer Steve Isaacs.
The day saw five odds-on favourites successful with only the Maiden win on Orion De Sienne in the hands off Micky Harris in the final race giving bookies any relief.
