IN bygone days sending a telegram was the quickest and easiest way to get a message to someone.

Invaluable during war-time, they were used to deliver news, both good and bad. An important part of the telegraphy process were the telegram girls, who would take down messages, type them up and send them on electronically.

A group of telegram girls that worked in Hereford 60 years ago have met up again at a reunion. The girls worked for the Post Office in Broad Street, Hereford, during the Second World War, and meet whenever they can.

But that can't be all that often as organiser Evelyn Hatcher explained: "After the war we all left the Post Office at various times and one of the girls, Zoe Pantall, moved to New Zealand with her husband. We meet when she is back in the country, and have met maybe half a dozen times down the years."

The girls took the opportunity on Friday to catch up with what people are doing now, as well as to talk about old times.
