THE offices of the Hereford Times boast at least four addicts of BBC3's cult show Perfect Housewife and there is little doubt that there are thousands more around the county - though, sadly, Anthea Turner has yet to put a Herefordshire "Perfect Housewife" through the life-changing process.
For anyone who has joined the cult of Anthea acolytes, armed with feather dusters and convinced of the benefits of de-cluttering, there is a chance to take tips from Anthea herself at the forthcoming BBC Good Homes Show, being held from June 13-17 at Birmingham's NEC, side-by-side with BBC Good Food Summer Festival and BBC Gardener's World Live.
Although there are many nuggets of invaluable advice buried in the programme, "it is very tongue-in-cheek," says Anthea. "There's a lot of fun poked at...well, me, mainly."
When she first pitched the idea for the show seven years ago, the feeling was that there wouldn't be an audience for it.
"Things domestic weren't cool, but now there's been a renaissance," she says.
"Even kitchenware is cool - there are even pink pans if you want them. Maybe we are starting to take more notice of our homes."
It is possible, she concedes, that her appearance on the first Celebrity Big Brother could have helped Perfect Housewife on its way.
"Claire (Sweeney) made the tea and I cleaned up. I think we must have been the only BB residents ever who left the house cleaner than it was when we went in."
Evangelical about the need for order, Anthea says: "I have never understood how people can make the biggest purchase of their lives when they buy a house and then turn it into a dumping ground."
The homes featured on the programme are, she says, just as bad as they look.
"If anything they are worse in real life, because the TV doesn't do the dirt justice."
Faced with the filth and clutter, Anthea is unfazed. "I just think I have to sort it out'. A lot of the people featured have simply lost heart, they're fed up with nagging their families and they've got lost in the melee of life and clutter."
Asked for her top PH tip, there is no hesitation: "De-clutter. Be ruthless and get rid of all the junk. Don't have 21 different bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your bathroom..."
