A PETITION is being launched for free parking for the disabled at Hereford County Hospital.

Shelia Williams, of Fownhope, is looking for supporters to back the petition which she wants to send to the hospital trust.

Mrs Williams said she was "extremely irate" after finding a warning ticket on her car parked in a disabled bay outside the A&E department at the hospital last Monday.

Her car showed official disabled credentials but not a pay and display ticket and the notice warned that in future it could be clamped or issued with a charge notice.

Mrs Williams said she had taken her husband John, who is disabled through cancer to the A&E unit and waited until he went to the admissions ward before returning to her vehicle.

She was away for three hours and it would have cost about £5.

Mrs Williams said her husband, who is 61, had served in the RAF for 30 years as an electronic engineer and had never been ill until diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

He had been receiving treatment at Cheltenham - five solid weeks of chemotherapy and radiology - and at Heartlands Hospital.

"I have never had to pay in a disabled bay before,'' she said.

Mrs Williams believes the County should allocate a section for free parking for disabled people. People who want to support her petition can phone her on 01432 860836 or email shelia. williams@onetel.com
