Fiona Castle, widow of entertainer Roy Castle, attended a workshop at Hereford Baptist Church.
More than 100 people attended the Come And Meet Every One (CAMEO) event, which was organised by the church in conjunction with the Wednesday club for over 50s which meets there.
The highlights of the day for many were the talks given by Fiona, which included one on her life in general, one on becoming a writer and publisher, and - what was felt to be the most useful to many of the people there - dealing with loss and bereavement in the family.
Representatives of Christian Ecology and CAB were on hand to provide information and give out advice. Hobby and craft stalls ensured there was something for everyone.
Juergen Koenigsbeck, of the baptist church, was left in no doubt why the event attracted more than double the usual Wednesday turnout.
He said: "Fiona's talks were of great interest, and we were pleased that she found time to stay around until the evening when the women's group met. She spoke then about her faith.
"This was the first time the church has organised anything like this and although we would of course love to arrange another, it is not always possible to find someone such as Fiona available, someone who will bring in the crowds."
