MORE than 50 people who have signed up to be members of Hereford County Hospital were welcomed at a special event.

Hereford Hospital Trust wants as many members as possible to join them before re-applying to the department of health for foundation trust status, which would give it more say over its own affairs.

Those who have shown an interest were able to meet each other as well as people from the trust board and hospital staff.

Members of the County Hospital will be able to express their views on the running of the hospital, come up with ideas and say how they can use their own skills to contribute to the hospital.

At the meeting, there were many suggestions - ranging from participating in focus groups for improving information and communication with patients, to individuals offering to help improve the overall hospital environment.

Many said they were very keen to get involved to help the hospital maintain its patient care standards.

The trust team said they were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by members.

"I was really encouraged by the turnout and, particularly, with the ideas and general enthusiasm the members have for the hospital.

"Such support from the people of Herefordshire and Powys is key to ensuring we are able to engage with our patients and the public to continue to provide high quality healthcare," said chief executive Martin Woodford.

A similar event was repeated in Builth Wells at the Lantra Hotel for the benefit of Powys members.
