A HEREFORD man who still cooks for himself and has no carers has celebrated his 100th birthday.

Arthur Grisbrook who lives in sheltered accommodation in Hampton Park turned 100 on October 1.

His family held birthday celebrations in the communal lounge.

On leaving school Mr Grisbrook worked as a finisher on the British Railways, Swindon then served in the Royal Engineers in North Africa and Italy from 1939 to 1946.

When he returned he worked on the railways again before joining social services as a woodwork instructor for disabled young adults in Swindon until his retirement.

He then moved to Hereford with his wife, Laura, to be near family. He has a daughter called Margaret Tyler, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs Grisbrook died ten years ago at the age of 89 and he copes well with basic cooking and has no carers or help, except from his family.

He keeps himself active with three sessions a week of gentle exercise with a few of his neighbours in their sheltered housing lounge.

Mr Grisbrook is passionate about music. Mrs Tyler said: "As a young man he played in dance bands, then when older always had an electric organ in his flat, which he still has and plays, always ringing us on birthdays to play Happy Birthday over the telephone."
