A WAR veteran from Herefordshire will be taking the Armistice commemorations to the next level by climbing Mount Everest.

Ex-serviceman James Webley, 32, and his partner Charlotte Radovanovic, 31, will mark the Armistice and its centenary on November 11 on the world's highest mountain.

The pair begin their journey this month through Kathmandu, before flying into Lukla airport in the Khumbu Region of the Himalayas.

They will then undertake 16 days of trekking to reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters altitude.

They hope to be joined by members of the Royal Gurkha Rifles to mark the sacrifices made by Commonwealth soldiers.

James, who grew up in Holme Lacey, served for 12 years in the British Army where he completed three tours in Bosnia and Afghanistan.

He was medically discharged in 2013 with severe arthritis in both hips caused by his service and he is currently waiting for a hip replacement.

The trek will raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

The pair hope the intrepid act of remembrance will recognise veterans, both past and present, who have served their country in various conflicts.
