THE horrors of the First World War are etched on the faces of these wounded soldiers who were recovering in Hereford.
The Anzacs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) was a First World War army corps of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force – and some of those who were injured ended up being treated at Holbrook Hospital in Hereford.
Hereford Times reader Charles Watkins submitted the photograph to this newspaper of the staff and patients at the hospital set up for soldiers from the Great War.
Una Lee (nee Herrin), his mother-in-law, is pictured on the far left of the back row.
She was a Red Cross nurse during the war and used to bike into the city from her home near Canon Pyon.
Mr Watkins, 87, said he had always found the picture fascinating and poignant.
"The soldiers' expressions are really powerful," he added.
"You can start to tell what they went through on the battlefield."
