AN ADVENTURER has returned from Africa after completing his greatest challenge yet.

Mark Williams from Craswall, in the southwest of the county, took on a project he named Run, Ride, Climb Africa.

The 25-year-old ran a marathon in the Rift Valley in Uganda at the start of December in extreme heat, unlike his practice runs at home with Wye Valley Runners.

The following week, he took part in a 200km cycling sportif, again in punishing conditions. He was one of only two people to complete the event.

Immediately following the sportif, he set out on a gruelling 1,200km cross-country cycle ride through Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to Mount Kilimanjaro, which he climbed over Christmas, all in aid of Kyaninga Children’s Development Centre, a provision for children with additional needs in Uganda.

Mark raised £15,000 with his two previous ventures for Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of his school friend Laurie Engel.

He is hoping to match this fundraising achievement for KCDC which supports his cousin Steve’s son, six-year-old Sidney Williams.

Mark said: "I was ready for another adventure and was considering what to do next. Steve was over earlier in 2018 with his family and we got chatting about Sidney’s needs.

"He has cerebral palsy and where we have educational support in this country, out there it is a lot harder to source qualified teaching and support staff who can help. Kyaninga Children’s Centre exists to provide that support and I was motivated to raise funds for them.”

Glyn Bufton of the Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley, was Mark’s first corporate sponsor and gave him a bottle of prize-winning Hill Billy Gin to take to the top of Africa’s highest mountain.

Sarah Mears of S and P Crossways Garage, Michaelchurch Escley, also sponsored Mark.
