THE Greggs vegan sausage roll is proving to be a big hit in Hereford.
With more than two hours still left to trade, the Greggs store on Commercial Street had only 20 of the new snacks left.
The other two Greggs in the city on Broad Street and Belmont Road did not receive the new vegan roll and directed disappointed customers to their outlet near High Town.
The new snack has proved a hot talking point that has certainly split opinion.
Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan branded the shop’s owners “PC-ravaged clowns” after the new vegan option was unveiled.
The presenter said “nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage” in response to the official Greggs launch tweet.
But Morgan, who has previously spoken out against some aspects of veganism, received a disarming response from the chain.
Greggs replied: “Oh hello Piers, we’ve been expecting you.”
The popular bakery was inundated with praise, with many saying they will become regular customers based on its response to Morgan's tweet.
Staff on Hereford's Commercial Street were unaware of Morgan's comments but said the 60 rolls sold on a 'release day' was a great start for the new product.
