GERMAN budget supermarket Lidl has resubmitted plans to build a store in Ross-on-Wye.
The revised planning application for a new supermarket would involve demolishing the Wolf Business Park on Gloucester Road and building the shop on the 2.2-acre site.
The store chain withdrew a previous application for the site in Autumn but company directors say the new proposals would create up to 40 jobs at the new Lidl.
They also believe the development would allow for up to 60 extra jobs to be created through the regeneration of the wider business park.
Lidl representatives say they have worked closely with the owners of the Wolf Business Park to put forward plans that will help redevelop the site.
They say the plans seek to protect existing operations and create new opportunities for the park’s tenants and businesses in the local area.
To achieve this, Wolf Business Park would sell part of the land to Lidl.
Lidl has stated that these proposals will benefit the town and encourage further growth and investment through improving facilities and generating a large number of new jobs.
A Lidl spokesperson said: “Since our last application was withdrawn last autumn, we have been working very hard to address points raised by planning officers in relation to the previous proposals.
“As a result, we have made a number of changes to our application including significant additional tree planting, highways improvements to encourage pedestrian and cycle access, further commitments to the delivery of four business units prior to the occupation of the store, as well as other measures such as enclosures around the loading area to minimise any potential operational noise.
“We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support we have received for these proposals and I look forward to working closely with local residents and the Council to achieve all the benefits this application can bring to the town.”
The new store will use the existing access from Alton Road with a new bell mouth access being proposed to the south which would serve the business park.
The scheme also includes plans for improved pedestrian access and footway widening to the north and north west of the site.
Residents have until March 7 to comment on the scheme which Herefordshire Council planners are expected to determine by April 12.
