A Herefordshire firm have won two awards for their restoration of a 600-year-old Welsh 'hall house.'
Building Contractors I. J. Preece & Son of Wormbridge won two categories at the regional RICS Awards 2019: Wales organized by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
They scooped the top accolade of ‘Project of the Year’, as well as taking home the award for ‘Building Conservation’ for their 'outstanding' work at Llwyn Celyn, Cwmyoy, near Abergavenny.
RICS judges said: “the conservation of Llwyn Celyn has clearly been led by a team that properly understands its history and heritage and how to present it today”.
Llwyn Celyn is one of the oldest surviving ‘hall houses’ in Wales (dating back to the 1420s) and although it was occupied until recently, had fallen into a state of disrepair.
The Landmark Trust bought the site with visions of restoring it to its former glory so that holiday makers and community projects could put the rescued buildings to good use.
Skilled craftsmen carefully conserved and restored many of the original features, with the use of traditional materials and techniques being a priority.
The project took over two and a half years and was also featured in the More4 documentary ‘£4 Million Restoration: Historic House Rescue’ which was first aired in January.
It will now be put forward to compete in the national category of the 2019 RICS awards.
