VILLAGERS showed "community spirit" as they made the most of the closure of a main road by holding a street party.

The party was held on the A465 at Stoke Lacy, near Bromyard, which is currently closed for eight-weeks as bridge strengthening works take place.

On Bank Holiday Monday, villagers got the trestle tables, sunshades and a paddling pool out to make the most of the weather and road closure before the traffic returns in October.

Ruth Hickmott, who lives in Stoke Lacy and is part of the village's heritage project, said: "Basically we held it because we could.

"There was no fundraising reason, simply let's have a party on the road because we won't be able to in six weeks' time.

"I think it shows the community spirit that has developed over the course of the Heritage Lottery Funded project on the church. Still a lot of goodwill after the Morgan event."

Next up for the village is the relaunch of the Stoke Lacy Flower and Produce Show on Sunday, September 8 from 2pm until 4pm.
