A 25-year-old man held after armed police pounced at Leominster railway station has been released and no further action has been taken.

He had been arrested on suspicion of making theats to kill.

Several police officers and vehicles were at St Botolphs Green, Leominster, on Saturday (September 21). They later swooped on a suspect at the town's station.

Laura Reaney, a fashion stylist, was waiting for a train there when officers with guns arrived.

She had been about to sit alongside the man when armed officers ordered him to the ground.

“I was just standing at the train station waiting for my train when police came running past me with massive guns yelling at the man next to me to get on the ground,” she said.

“I didn’t know what to do. I just ran and backed up against the wall behind me and stood in shock. I’ve never seen guns like that before. I’d just looked up from my phone when I saw a gun right in front of me,” said Ms Reaney, of Leominster.

Earlier, part of St Botolphs Green had been cordoned off by police.

They have not said if the two incidents were linked.

They did, though, confirm that specialist firearms officers had carried out an operation to detain a man at the station.

Inspector Mike Phillips said on Saturday: “We would like to reassure the public that this operation involving both covert and uniformed officers was successful and tried to also minimise disruption to the public.

"However, we do appreciate that some members of the public at the train station may have found the incident unsettling and I would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience while officers detained one man who is now in custody.”
