THE last trace of the old Broadlands Primary School in Hereford will soon disappear.

Planners are being asked to approve demolition of the abandoned school to make way for a new place of learning – Beacon College Special Academy.

Staff and pupils left the Prospect Walk site in 2015 and moved to Aylestone Business and Enterprise College in September 2015.

But before then Broadlands was a typical Herefordshire primary school whose children's achievements, like so many in the county, were routinely celebrated in the pages of the Hereford Times.

Twenty years ago pupils there were, like some many others in Britain, moved by the plight of youngsters in the decrepit orphanages of Romania.

They set about collecting food and other essentials to send to the former communist republic.

A year later the mood was more upbeat at Broadlands. Children were excited by the visit of pop group Soul U*nique (whatever happened to them?), who were visiting schools as part of their national concerts tour.

Band members Ben Rogers, Kwa'shaan, Marc Jason and Kate Meranda gave a preview of their new single 3iL, which eventually reached Number 66 in the charts.
