DEBRIS blocking the river underneath the Old Bridge in Hereford will be removed when it's safe to do so, the Environment Agency has said.

Tree branches, footballs and rubbish bins have blocked the middle span of the bridge since heavy rain caused flooding in the county over a week ago.

The bridge was closed to vehicles and traffic as the river Wye level hit the highest level since 1998.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "Our officers are assessing the situation and will clear the debris when practical and safe to do so."

In Worcester, the bridge over the river Severn in the city centre was meant to be closed this morning debris removal work, but it was cancelled.

The bridge was due to be closed eastbound, but a change in the river level made the operation unsafe.
