VOTERS are heading to the polls today (Thursday) as they have their say on the next MP to represent their constituency.

Polling stations around the country will be open from 7am this morning and will close at 10pm.

People wishing to vote should head to their local polling station, which are often in places such as schools, churches and village halls.

You can only vote at the polling station location on your card, but you don't need to take this with you to vote.

Herefordshire Council expects a turnout of between 70 per cent and 80 per cent and added it had received 1,920 applications to register to vote from people aged 18-25 prior to the election.

Of those young people voting for the first time, they are aware how the result could affect them.

“It’s my future, so it’s important that I get out and vote,” 18-year-old politics student Harry Hayes said.

“I didn’t think I’d be voting this soon. I’m looking for to it because I’ll be able to have a say.

“I’m mainly voting for a party rather than politicians, but it’s demoralising living in the south Herefordshire seat.

“That has an impact on who I vote for because it’ll be hard to topple the Conservatives.”

Another politics student at Hereford Sixth Form College said this general election is a chance for people her age to have their say on climate change.

“I just feel in the recent political climate that younger people want to have their say,” Katie Evans, 18, said.

“There’s frustration in the way things currently are. There’s more passion for things like tuition fees and climate change form young people because it’s their future.”

While Miss Evans wasn’t old enough to vote in the EU referendum in 2016, she dubbed this election “a Brexit vote” but it’s not the only issue that will define who she votes for.

The results from the two Herefordshire constituencies are expected to be declared by 4.30am tomorrow (Friday).
