TOWN and parish councils in Herefordshire have highlighted road safety, drugs and fly tipping as problems, a new survey shows.

Of the 40 councils to take part in the survey, organised by the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for West Mercia, 13 said road safety as a problem.

Issues such as drug-related crime, fly tipping and speeding were also raised.

But overall, most councils said they believe West Mercia Police are doing a good job.

More than two thirds of respondents rated the force as doing a fair or good job, and the majority said the response to local crime and disorder issues as good, fair or excellent.

There were mixed responses when asked about visibility and familiarity of Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs), who work to address local concerns, as well as tackling crimes.

The majority of councils rated police visibility as poor or very poor, the same as the previous year, and half said their local SNTs are totally unknown to them or net well known.

PCC John Campion said: “I want to ensure that the views of the communities are listened to and acted upon.

“The feedback provided by Herefordshire town and parish councils helps to inform decisions and provide a clear indication of what’s working and where further improvements need to be delivered.

“I am committed to challenging and supporting West Mercia Police to improve the visibility of police around Herefordshire.

“I note the concerns raised about road safety and I will continue to work with the police and partners to address these.”
