IT MIGHT not seem that long ago, but it was 15 years ago tomorrow when work could start on the new Whitecross High School in Hereford

On January 27, 2005 contractors were given the go-ahead to start work on the new site in Three Elms Road after Herefordshire Council and Stepnell Ltd signed a construction contract the week previous.

The contractual agreement for building work followed ground works which began earlier in December.

The £74 million school was expected to be finished by the summer of 2006 and provide 900 places for students. The aim of the futuristic design was to use energy efficiently.

At the time headteacher Denise Strutt said she was thrilled at the latest development.

"Currently we have fantastic students and excellent staff, but poor buildings," she said.

"With the new facilities the sky is the limit. I'm particularly pleased to see the vision, which we worked so hard to create, coming to fruition."
