A MAIN road which connects two Herefordshire towns was closed on Wednesday morning as a car crashed into a building.

The A449 was closed at Much Marcle between Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye as emergency services were called to the single-car crash.

The car had struck the old post office and general stores opposite the Walwyn Arms.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, West Mercia Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service all responded to the incident shortly after 7.30am.

"On arrival we found one small vehicle had collided with a building and post box which in turn had caused damage to the structure of the building," a fire service spokesperson from Ledbury Fire Station said.

"The vehicle was made safe by Ledbury crew. The buildings structural integrity was maintained by Hereford Fire Station.

"Asbestos was believed to be exposed due to the damage of the building so respirators were worn by crews working in close proximity."

One patient was seen by paramedics at the scene, but there injuries weren't believed to be serious.

"We were called by the fire service at 7.41am to near the Walwyn Arms to reports versus a building," an ambulance service spokesperson said.

"One ambulance attended and there was one patient who was described as walking wounded, but they did not require hospital treatment."

The road reopened shortly after.
