THE call has gone out to mobilise a volunteer army for Herefordshire’s frontline fight against coronavirus

Herefordshire Council has set up a response team to help those who most need support during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The council wants everyone who can offer a helping hand at this time of need to contact their Talk Community Covid-19 response team.

They understand that this is a worrying and challenging time for many, so in response to the pandemic, they have teamed up with community organisations and businesses to help connect people to support in their local area.

The response team will be providing reassurance and support over the coming weeks, helping people to live well in their own home for as long as is needed, but they are also looking for volunteers.

Last week, all Herefordshire households were sent a letter with information about what to do if they need support. This letter has been sent out to coincide with the advice from the Government that certain vulnerable groups should self-isolate for 12 weeks and other people should stay at home for the next three weeks.

The letter includes a request for volunteers and so far more than 600 people have answered the call and are providing vital support in their local community.

Adults and communities director Stephen Vickers said: “We would like to thank all of the volunteers who have offered their support so far.

“We will be in touch with everyone who has registered their details. However, we do need more people to assist us with our Talk Community response, so if you can help please contact the council’s Talk Community Covid-19 response team on 01432 260027 or email talkcommunitycovidresponse@herefordshire.gov.uk.”

Lucy Hurds, who is a trustee of Hereford Food Bank, said anyone who needs food in Hereford should call the response team telephone number and ask to be referred to them.

“We have the resources to help people. We can offer a helping hand to those who are self employed or are awaiting universal credit payments that need food.

“Also, if people are in a good place to offer anything there is a need for tinned meat at the moment. People can donate the food at major supermarkets.”
