Kali

Arts Alive@Home A curated bi – monthly series of performance work to enjoy at home, but experience collectively with others, joining together for a shared post show chat or response.

From demure housewife to bloodthirsty goddess, gurgling infant to elephant man, meditating sage to cosmic fire-eater, Hindu mythology illuminates a mind-blowing world of radical transformations. Kali is one of the wildest shape-shifters of all. Demon-slayer, Life-saver, Supreme-Mother, Destruction-dancer, this goddess is truly Awesome. When an evil power spreads its clawed hands across the world, Kali’s time has come… Join storyteller, Emily Hennessey and sitar player extraordinaire, Sheema Mukherjee, for a white-knuckled tuc-tuc ride through sun-kissed palaces, fiend-infested forests and every cacophonous saffron-scented marketplace in between.

Cerin Mills, Live Events Programmer at Arts Alive, said, “We think our audience will really enjoy sharing the experience of an online show. They can watch the fabulous events from the comfort of their sofa, organise their own interval drinks, share their response with the other audience members, and speak to the performers after the show. Whilst there is no replacing the atmosphere of a live show, we believe this will be a really unique and enriching community experience, for people of all ages.”

The line up includes The Fairy’s Kiss from the Scottish Ballet on June 18, with a post show chat with principal dancer, Beth Kingsley-Garner. The award -winning Puppet State Theatre will be sharing a recording of their show The Man who Planted Tree. Recorded at The Edinburgh Fringe 2019, it can be seen on August 20, and on July 16, songwriter and performer Louise Jordan will share extracts from Florence, a one-woman show about Florence Nightingale, with a live Q&A after the show.

National Theatre at Home

Available from today, May 28 to Thursday, June 4, at 7pm

It’s 1974, and Britain has a hung Parliament. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backstabbing as the political parties battle to change the future of the nation.

This House is a timely, moving and funny insight into the workings of British politics by James Graham (Ink, ITV's Quiz) and directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things). This much-loved production enjoyed two sold-out National Theatre runs, a West End transfer and national tour as well as being filmed by National Theatre Live.

The play is suitable for ages 14+ with some strong language throughout.

Online premiere - Friday, May 29, 7pm

#OurHousetoYourHouse from The Royal Opera House

The Cellist

Cathy Marston's first work for the Royal Opera House Main Stage is a lyrical memoir of the momentous life of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré, from her discovery of the cello through her celebrity as one of the most extraordinary players of the instrument to her frustration and struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Rich and poignant, joyous and tragic, The Cellist draws on the talents of The Royal Ballet's Principals, Character Artists, Soloists and Corps to tell the moving story of the cellist's life. Composer Philip Feeney incorporates some of the most moving and powerful cello music of Elgar, Beethoven, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Piatti, Rachmaninoff and Schubert into an exquisite score that is itself an homage to the cello.

Wolves are Coming for You

Someone has seen a wolf.

Where did it come from? How many are there? Someone must be able to do something about them. Otherwise, how will our children get to school? And how will we all get to line-dancing in the village hall?

Set over one extraordinary day in an ordinary village, Wolves Are Coming For You explores just how much wild we're comfortable with.

Each Slow Dusk

Each Slow Dusk by Rory Mullarkey was originally live-streamed around the globe on Friday 21 November 2014 from The Palace Community Centre in Ibstock, Leicestershire, via the Royal Court Theatre, and was the first ever live broadcast of a performance from a village hall.

A startling play about action, humanity, and the legacy of war, which immersed audiences in the reality of conflict in vivid, thrilling detail. It gave you a fresh way of thinking about war - from the soldier’s perspective then, and the women’s perspective now.

Milked

Milked by Simon Longman is a riotous comedy from Channel 4 bursary award-winning playwright Simon Longman. His first play, it charted the experience of being out of work in the countryside; how the emptiness can be a safe haven as well as a dark terror. Brilliantly sharp and funny, and ultimately unexpectedly moving, this was a terrific, unmissable new play.

Suitable for ages 14+.

Victoria Station

LADS (Ledbury Amateur Dramatic Society) member Ben Mowbray runs his own drama company, Our Star Theatre Company, which has performed several shows in the Market Theatre. Our Star Theatre Company now presents its first ever ‘radio play’, Victoria Station, a thriller by Harold Pinter. This is generously being offered free of charge on YouTube. Ben encourages you to share this link ‘far and wide’. The play is quite short, involving an increasingly fraught radio dialogue between a minicab controller (dispatcher) and a driver (number 274) who is stopped by the side of “a dark park” in Crystal Palace, supposedly awaiting further instructions. You may never think of a cab ride the same way again...

OSTC’s second ‘Radio Play’, Mother Figure by Alan Ayckbourn, in which a mum's 'baby talk' plays havoc with the nosy neighbours, is now also available free of charge on YouTube.
