A MOTHER handed her teenage son and his friend in to police after they confessed they had stolen quad bikes from farms.

Jack Chedgzoy, of Acreage, Whitbourne, and Jourdan Paul Harrison, of Bannut Tree Estate, Bromyard, both admitted two counts of burglary when they appeared before magistrates.

Prosecutor Ralph Robyns Landricombe said two Honda quad bikes worth £6,000 and £3,000 had gone missing from outbuildings at farms in Winslow and Risbury on January 24 and 25.

One of the quad bikes was later found stored at an address in Ludlow, and the second was found at another farm after tip-offs were received by the owner.

The court heard 18-year-old Chedgzoy and 19-year-old Harrison were handed in at Hereford Police Station, where they admitted both burglaries.

In interview, the pair said they had taken the quad bikes in a bid to make some money, but had not known what to do with them next.

Chris Read, mitigating, said the pair’s plan had been motivated by a number of quad bikes previously going missing in the area.

“One or other of them had the idea that they could make some money by taking them,” he said.

“But they had no clue what to do with them. The idea was totally amateur and embarrassing.

“When people began talking about it, Chedgzoy confessed to his mother, and she took them both to the police station."

The court heard the quad bikes were recovered undamaged.

Both received a 12 month community order and Chedgzoy must complete 50 hours of unpaid work, while Harrison must complete 75 hours of unpaid work. Both must pay costs of £185 and a £90 victim surcharge.
