A RARE visitor to Britain has been spotted in Herefordshire.
Hereford Times Camera Club member Ella Mentry took this stunning shot of what she believes is a black-crowned night heron.
She says the bird took residence for just a few days in a tree in a village north of Hereford.
She used a telephoto lens to capture a picture of the heron, which is unusual in the heron family in that it hunts for fish and frogs at night.
They roost during the day and can only usually be spotted at dawn and dusk.
Although a few have been seen breeding in Somerset, any black-crowned night herons seen in Britain are usually rare migratory visitors, with only 10 or so officially recorded spottings annually.
