AN ECO-LAUNDRY company wants to take on the giants of the cleaning business, with the founder's idea coming from a trip to Hay-on-Wye's Co-op supermarket.
The now award-winning firm Splosh was launched in 2012 after the inspirational supermarket trip, and its kitchen cleaner is actually cheaper than budget supermarket Aldi's offering.
Splosh, which is now based in Newtown in mid-Wales, said its eco-friendly kitchen cleaner costs just 26p per litre compared to 87p per litre for Aldi's.
Founder Angus Grahame, who still lives in the area, said Splosh was the first and original company to offer refillable laundry, home cleaning products and toiletries delivered through the letterbox.
He said the idea makes it easy for customers to cut out plastic waste, and the firm has already saved more than 1.2 million bottles from bins, saying Splosh is now "standing up against the giants and showing them how it’s done".
Mr Grahame, 56, came up with the idea for Splosh when he was on a trip to his local supermarket in Hay-on-Wye, to recycle old plastic bottles.
There he watched a woman leave the supermarket with a trolley full of new bottles – the same bottles he was recycling.
He decided something need to change and he launched Splosh in 2012, and now the firm's range of cleaning products comes in the form of super-concentrated refills, meaning that the original bottles can be used time and time again, cutting a customer’s plastic waste by 95 per cent.
The refill pouches can even be returned and Splosh will upcycle them into new products, which cuts plastic waste by 100 per cent.
Mr Grahame said: “As I sat in the supermarket car park, I had my lightbulb moment.
"I wanted to make sure that being environmentally friendly didn’t cost the earth. Since we launched we have won a number of awards including the prestigious Green Apple Award at the House of Commons, recognising environmental best practice.
"We are constantly listening to our customers and taking on board feedback, so that our products are the best they can be.
"We have spent years getting our formulations right working with leading chemists. There is no point having eco-products delivered through your letter box, if they don’t perform.”
