THE bright red shop sign of Forbuoys newsagent in Hereford’s Whitecross Road might be gone, but the name still lives on.

Peter Davies took this picture of the newsagent in 1980, while he was living across the road from the shop.

He shared it in our We Grew Up In Hereford Facebook group, before some of the 9,000 members started to share their memories of the shop.

Maryse Ozguc said Gary Rawlings used to be the manager at Forbuoys, and Jane Mackney said she used to work there.

Commenting on the post, Ms Mackney said her mum, grandma and cousin also used to, and she remembers walking past the shop, near the Co-op, before school.

Gill George also got involved, adding: “I remember going there and buying a Smash Hits, we lived in Credenhill at the time.”

While the name Forbuoys is no longer emblazoned across the front of the shop, the name still lives on. Despite now being a McColls shop, Deb Kev Wilson said they still use the old name.

The surrounding area has changed a lot over the last 40 years, as highlighted by Clive Williams.

He said: “When I was a kid in the 50s I would sit down on the roundabout, where the flats are it was all fields.

“I could sit for an hour and only see two or three cars on the Kings Acre Road. Happy days.”

Chris Stone added: “I remember the gypsies camping on the fields next to Yazor Road, with their coloured horses.”
