FROM fixing a broken fan belt with underwear to knocking a statue from its pedestal, members of our We Grew Up In Hereford Facebook group have been sharing their memories of their first cars.
For Helen Wilks, a day of celebration turned into a bit of a nightmare after she made a misjudgement in her Citroen Dyane while reversing on the day she passed her test.
“I drove to school and managed to reverse into a statue of Our Lady and knock it off the pedestal,” she wrote.
Others reminisced on the ease of fixing their own cars with whatever was to hand – such as tights in place of a fan belt.
“Unfortunately, you cannot service your own car anymore with modern cars,” said Barbara Moverley. “It was always fun changing your plugs and oil. The first car I drove was an Austin 7 with a sunroof.”
