Six of the best places in Herefordshire for ice cream

That's why we're rounding up five of the best places in and around Hereford for the frozen treat as temperatures look set to hit 30C.

But first, an honourary mentioned for Lock's Garage in Allensmore. Famed for its bargain-price Mr Whippys, the garage has stopped selling them.

Rowlestone Farmhouse Ice Cream

The farm in the Golden Valley says: "Visit our ice cream parlour and enjoy freshly-brewed tea and coffee with sandwiches, paninis or cake – and of course you can choose from our many flavours of ice cream.

"Try our ‘affagato’ – luxurious vanilla ice cream with a neat espresso poured over… sublime!"

Kate Gale said in a Google review: "What a little gem! We were told about Rowlestone Court when we stopped for lunch at a nearby pub and decided to head over for ice cream.

"Once here we found the playground with the most wonderful views and the woodland walk down to fab zip wire! Beautiful place, lovely ice cream and definitely worth the detour."

Creams, Hereford

The nationwide chain, which opened its first store in 2011, said: "We’re proud, naturally, to have given the world some of the best desserts known to man – but we’re even more proud of our commitment to diversity.

"People matter more to us than anything else (even ice-cream) and we open our arms to everyone both as customers and in our cafe teams.

"We want every visit to Creams to be an indulgent adventure for the senses and we see our desserts as ‘every day celebrations’. Once you’ve experienced Creams desserts we reckon you’ll be looking to celebrate something – anything! – every day."

In a Google review, heljax77 said: "It was my first visit to creams. I can say that I'm very impressed and would have liked to try a lot of different sundaes off the menu and had to narrow it down to one choice.

"However will be a good excuse to visit again!"

Shepherds Parlour, Hay-on-Wye

Shepherds Parlour started life as Shepherds Ice Cream parlour, run by Juliet Noble and Martin Orbach, the creators of Shepherds Ice cream.

In 2018 they stepped away from the parlour, focusing on ice cream production. The parlour is now run by Jessica Hope-Jones.

Angela Owen said in a Google review: "We've been regulars for years. The best coffee anywhere and wonderful ice creams and cakes. The staff are very friendly and helpful, can't recommend it too highly."

Gelatis, Ross-on-Wye

Describing itself than more than just ice cream, American diner Gelatis in Broad Street has some good reviews on Google.

Jessy said: "Super cute American-themed ice cream shop serving pancakes, waffles, sundaes with a breakfast and dinner menu.

"Lots of vegetarian option meals which attracted me to Gelatis in the first place. Looking forward to returning."

Berry's, near Ledbury

Berry's, formerly Just Rachel Ice Cream, sells its products at a range of stockists across the county.

It was also named as best dairy producer at the Hereford Times Food and Farming Awards earlier this year.

"For over 30 years, Berry’s has been producing some of the most delicious handmade artisan ice cream in the country," its website says.

"The story began back in 1980 when Rachel Hicks first produced a small range of ice creams made with 100% cream and totally natural products.

"Located in the heart of the Three Counties, the business has introduced more flavours to the range over the years including sorbets as well as developing a Vegan/Dairy-free range made with coconut cream, and a variety of totally delicious frozen desserts."

Stockists include Hereford's Waitrose, Canon Pyon Stores, Pengethley Farm Shop, Rose Cottage Tea Gardens in Symonds Yat East and Leominster's Drapers Lane Delicatessen.

Oakchurch Farm Shop, Staunton-on-Wye

All ice cream at Oakchurch is handmade in small batches at the family-run farm shop.

It's also made using fresh local ingredients, including fruit grown on the Oakchurch farm.

It says the icecream is a unique sensory experience, with 22 different flavours, and even a dog-friendly version.

The icecream has also won a Great Taste award, out of 14,000 nominations.

In addition to this, apple cider and caramel was the winning flavour in a recent ice cream flavour competition run by Oakchurch Farm Shop at Staunton-on-Wye.

The winning entry was suggested by Maria Smith from Clehonger and joins the range of over 50 hand made ice creams and sorbets that they make and sell exclusively at Oakchurch.
