Plume of smoke seen for miles as fire burns in Herefordshire

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at 4.58pm on Saturday to reports of the fire near Bromyard.

Crews from Bromyard, Hereford, Leominster and Worcester arrived to find a large fire in a field of hay, just east of the town.

Around seven acres of farmland affected, and Bromyard fire station said with the support of the local farmers and their machinery, crews were able get a fire break in before all of the field was involved.

They said one farmer supplied a 7,000-litre water tanker which was used to spray water around the edges to prevent the fire spreading.

"A very hot afternoon for everyone that was involved," they said.

"Thank you Neil Tickle for the supply of ice cream, it was much appreciated."

A plume of smoke from the field could be seen from Bromyard, and villages further afield.
