A MAIN road near Hereford is closed due to a fuel spillage and vehicle recovery after "multiple" crashes.
West Mercia Police said the A480 was closed between Hereford and Lyonshall, near Kington, and was likely to remain closed for much of the morning.
But Herefordshire Council said the road would be closed overnight.
The road was closed between Credenhill and Norton Canon due to an oil spillage and recovery of vehicle, police said at 6.40am on Monday.
And in an update at 8.30am, officers said the road, from St Mary's Church to Station Road via Upperton was likely to remain closed "until later this morning".
They warned drivers to avoid the area and seek an alternative route.
Herefordshire Council said the road was closed due to a fuel spillage and "multiple" crashes.
In a further update, contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places said the A480 from Wyevale Nurseries, Hereford, to the A4112 at Sarnesfield would remain closed overnight due to the fuel spillage.
A full closure remains in place and it said it was "vital" that drivers did not use the road.
The road surface needed to be assessed, it said.
