And every year, plenty of people attempt to smash previous records in the hope of seeing their name in print as the world record holder.

Here, in no particular order, are the world records held in Herefordshire.
Most signatures on a t-shirt
Ian Sockett holds the record for most signatures on a t-shirt at 1,124.
Ian ran the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon wearing the t-shirt. He has been running marathons since 2009 in order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Largest surviving medieval world map
The largest surviving medieval world map is the Hereford Mappa Mundi, which measures 1.58 x 1.33 m (5 ft 2 in x 4 ft 4 in).
The map was created in England in around 1300, and shows the world as it was known to scholars in medieval Europe.
The map has been on display in Hereford Cathedral since the Middle Ages.
Largest chained library
The largest surviving example of a chained library is at Hereford Cathedral in the United Kingdom.
The library holds 227 medieval manuscripts and around 1,200 early printed books, each anchored to the shelves with a chain that connects the book's binding to an iron rod that runs along the bottom of the shelf.
