PEOPLE stood in solidarity outside Hereford Cathedral and took part in a three-minute silence as a part of a national day of action to end violence against women and girls, even in a storm.
International Christian charity Mothers' Union Diocese organised a campaign called #nomore1in3 as a part of its Global Day of Action on November 27 to end violence against women and girls.
The silence was an ode to the one in three women world-wide who have experienced domestic and sexual violence – a statistic that soared following coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.
Andria Lewis, Diocesan President of Hereford Diocese Mother's Union, said: "We still need Women's Aid; we still need refuges for people who are victims of violence of both sexes. We are there to listen and support and fundraise."
People stood with local government party members, council members and key Mothers' Union figureheads for three minutes of silence at 1.03pm for women suffering from abuse.
Labour party member Neil Barrington said: "It is a privilege to be asked to be involved in this event, it is a really good cause."
A victim of domestic abuse chose to speak out but chose to remain anonymous.
"I was a victim of abuse from my husband for 11 years.
"I wasn't aware of the Mother's Union before today; it has given me the confidence to speak out and helped with my healing."
The Global 16 Days campaign runs annually from November 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
